Is This The Biggest Problem In Professional Table Tennis?
Any sport at the world's highest level is about marginal gains and finding small advantages to tilt the odds in your favor. The problem will only continue to grow unless we find a way to address it. Here are my ideas on how we might potentially reduce it.

    Hi Anders- I have not read all the comments, but it seems to me that the only real practical and most easily enforcible solution would be a rule change stating that the ball must be tossed vertically,and/or making the variation much less (say 5 to 10 degrees off vertical). Perhaps one of the difficulties for the ittf Is the fact that many players have spent years developing their serves (which may be illegal), and because these illegal serves have been largely overlooked by the umpires, these off vertical and partially hidden serves have become ingrained as a normal part of the modern game and used (intentionally or unintentionally) by most players. Even a lot of service coaching videos are featuring off vertical ball tosses. My solution would be; -change the service toss rules (vertical would be most unambiguous) - educate the players,coaches and umpires -indicate a rule change far in advance (even years) so that players can adapt . -focus particularly on change with the young players ,so that the vertical serve is normal and automatic for them Thank you for your great vids-keep up the good work! I think they should start installing tiny camera in the middle of the table under the net. so we can clearly see if the ball is hidden during service. anyone?

    Illegal serve made TT way less attractive to watch. It's losing spectators. Why don't TT society never take a look at other racket sports. This kind of stupid thing never happen to tennis bedminton padel etc. Most empires are so amature and just shit. Illegal serve should be like if you suspect then it's illegal, not like to you only suspect and let it go. That's totally crap. If they cannot do this, they should invite Samsonov to help to change to a more standard rule and also some post match evulation even a committee able to disqualify a play due to illegal serve even if he/she already win the match.

    I'm glad I saw this video. I used to play a lot 15+ years ago, including some competitive play. Nowadays I don't really play myself, but I often watch clips, highlights or matches of tabletennis on UA-cam. It has often been the case that I think to myself "Hmm, I guess the rules for the serve have changed, because back when I played, you had to throw the ball directly up". I guess I never took the time to do much research to find out if something had changed, but this video now clears that up for me. Thank you for taking the time to explain this in a brief and clear manner and standing for the integrity of the game.

    I don't have experience with table tennis beyond Pongfinity. Is this something like travelling/carrying in basketball? Where everybody does it, nobody wants it called, and so it doesn't get called while purists complain the background? Or is it like sticky substances in baseball, where the sport really does want to get rid of it, even if most players do it and accept it?

    An umpire saying he/she/they/it is/are afraid to disturb play is ridiculous. It's their job to maintain the rules. Disturbing bad play is the literal job description. They/she/he/it may as well just be a spectator.

    Nice video, however I think you misinterpret the rule about the ball has to be visible to the opponent when touchin the pad when serving. The rule is very clear and it MUST be followed by the server and that means that he must adapt his serving position so that the receiving player CAN see the ball regardless of his position and what hand he is using. Personally that position with your back at the table is totally wrong because it has been "invented" with the very purpose to hide the ball. I am an amateur player but I naver serve with my back towards the table.

    Today the new generation of non-professional players looks at these shots and thinks about how damn good and unique players like you are, Anders, without however knowing other great side spin masters of the past like Patrick Chila, a true artist. Every shot, forehand or backhand had a spectacular curve!! I personally guarantee!! I remember that he delayed the shot until a moment before the impossible, and with his grip very low on the handle, using his wrist, he gave devastating effects to the ball.

    the problem with ping pong is the ball, all serves should be legal but only with two tone balls. would solve everything. and go back to the old ball size and scoring. modern pong is not as good. the serving shuold be as tricky as players can make it. great for the game. i agree with the two color paddles even though i'm a big seemiller fan.

  • @BenjiBear
    @BenjiBear 3 дні тому

    I disagree about making the same serve illeagal or ileagal for left or right handed receivers. The end result is important. Making the receiver able to see the ball. I personally believe the umpire and receiver needs to be able to see the ball at point of contact especially.

  • @panda4247
    @panda4247 3 дні тому

    30° is way too much (especially considering that the ball slows down vertically but its side speed does not change much), The rule should be redefined to something like: ball should be tossed up at least 30cm (notice that I increased this number too) and cannot fall down more than 10cm from where it was tossed." This would eliminate the egregiously big side-throws that are then hidden behind the body. Also, I agree with you that the umpires should take the point for this more often. The "hidden from opponent's view" part - yeah, that is sketchy because it depends on where the opponent stands. More clear would be "hidden from view from the center of opponent's end line". It's up to the receiving player where they stand. The problem is, how would you check this quickly, when the umpire views it from the side, not from the back of the table. The process could be that the receiving player can challenge it and then they could check it on camera. Sure, this would create many delays during the first year, but then the players would learn to serve according to the rules and only occasional dispute would arise. The other possibility would be to change the rule that the serving player cannot be closer to his end line than the ball being served (i.e. no part of that player can be "offside", regardless of it impeding the vision of the ball or not. Again, the players would adapt quickly. They are only doing these weird serves now because they are not penalized, their "normal" serves would be just as good (minus the extra unfair advantage).

    Kudos for addresing the biggest TT elephant in the room. Rethorical question, who do you think is the biggest serve cheater in TT history, regarding this rule if would have been applied like 40-50 years ago? Because winning by "bending" the rules and cheating is the worst in sport, at least fair play sports. Hint, it was man world no.1 in TT, the shameful one, looking at it through the history of TT. Keep posting.

    If I understand correctly, the serving was significantly less regulated and defined just a couple of decades ago. I distinctly remember watching table tennis being played in the Olympics in the 90's, and the players would literally hide the ball and the racket during almost the entire serve, making it impossible to see which way they were spinning it.

    For me it is clear that the rules must be changed. My recommendation is: hip and shoulders must be parallel to the table until the ball is hit. This is the end of all discussions about wrong serve.

    All these rules came about because there was a time when people were using all sorts of hidden serves. What was funny was I almost missed this entire era - I quit playing before hidden serves became the vogue and started playing again shortly before they were made illegal. The first time I saw one, I was shocked. You usually had to be quite good to pull it off, people at my skill level weren't that good, but I hit around one day with someone rated about 2000 and he was serving hidden serves. You can see vestiges of the era in the stance people take to serve, even to this day - where you stand like McEnroe to the table, with the rear foot behind and the front of the body facing away from the table. I've been told it's to get the ball down low to the table, especially for taller players. People didn't use to stand like this back in the 1970s or early 80s, and it takes some movement to recover from the serve to receive the serve return. Which must be practiced, and doesn't come naturally. Back then the ball would come out from behind the body, or from behind the free arm. Another thing I notice - a lot of younger players (or players who only started playing in the last ten years) will complain that older players don't throw the ball up enough. Note that older players learned to play before a lot of these rules became rules. Some even still play to 21 points. If you're playing against older players, especially in a recreational setting and in Asia, it would probably be best to be a little more tolerant of that sort of thing. 😁

    You haven’t really fully explained why umpires don’t enforce the rule consistently. You say they need to be “brave”, but it’s not clear what they are afraid of. I think the obvious solution is to use only umpires who will enforce the rules properly.

      They are afraid of making enemies and losing their jobs. Nations pour millions of dollars into training their athletes, the players have been in tt bootcamp almost since they were toddlers. As such they have reached an insane level of mastery, and are highly respected. Personal and national pride are riding on results. On the other hand, the umpires are nobody. Almost no one knows their names, they aren't paid well. The vast majority are club level players who initially thought it would be fun to umpire or were recruited to help out in local tournaments. Because they are players themselves, they idolize the pros. Expecting them to make unbiased calls is like expecting a high school basketball player to call travelling on Lebron James. Regarding the fear, tt is very nationalistic sport. Powerful countries have a presence at these events. Think about it.

    For me this starts at kocal league level, where a huge percentage of players serve illegally. As a local league player myself. We have 4 divisions. I remember in my first seasin starting at the bottom division, so many illegal serves. I remember one point 1 team called out another team in the bottom division for not throwing the ball up high enough, however they were seen as the ones in the wrong for calking it out, people where like 'its only the bortom division in a local league, were not professionals here' It even happens in the top division all the time. Some people play against opponents with illegal serves but won't call it out because 'i know it's illegal, but he doesn't gain anything from it so im not bothered ' This attitude is ao bad because nost pros start off at local league as young children and this attitude gets bred into them and carrys on as their level rises

    I think the current rules are fine, it's pretty easy to serve legally. It's only hard for an experiences player to break their current serving habits. I think the goal of the current rules, to ensure visibility of the serve, is worth keeping, because it means rallies are likely to be longer, which is more fun to play, and more fun to watch.
